Obituary for Virginia Sue (Smith) Roberts

Sister-in-law of Tim Roberts, Owner and Funeral Director of Roberts Funeral Home

Virginia Sue (Smith) Roberts, 74, of Logan, Ohio, went to be with the Lord and her husband on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 with her daughters by her side.

Sue was born August 4, 1949 in Hillsboro, Ohio, a daughter of L. Eugene and Mary V. “Connie” (Conrad) Smith.

Sue was a graduate of East Clinton High School, Class of 1967, where she was part of Future Homemakers of America. She was a graduate of Holzer School Nursing in 1970 where she received a Diploma in Nursing. Sue practiced as an RN at Clinton Memorial Hospital, General Hospital of Cincinnati, and Hocking Valley Community Hospital where she retired after 35 years of nursing then cared for her loving husband. Over her nursing career she was a House Supervisor, staff nurse on Med-Surg, Surgery, Emergency Department, Ambulatory Care, and helped run LHSD sports physicals, the community disaster drills and blood drives. She worked at Anna’s Guest House in Logan, Ohio following her retirement.

Sue served as a Funeral Associate for Smith Funeral Homes in New Vienna and Wilmington, OH, in her earlier years and finished this career most recently with Roberts Funeral Home, Logan, Ohio.

Her humble heart honored the Lord growing up at The New Vienna United Methodist Church. She was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church until her move to Reflections, Lancaster, Ohio where she attended church services there rejoicing about God’s love.

In her retirement years at Reflections she enjoyed activities such as chair volleyball, arts & crafts, listening to her favorite bands, By Chance and Greg Dickson. She was a member of Chef’s Corner and Town Hall. She helped organize and play bingo. She was the Keeper of The Cards for Hand & Foot. She continued with her serving heart helping other residents in need.

Sue was a loving mother to many and an adoring grandmother. Her greatest passion was her two daughters. She loved following their social and sports pursuits. She enjoyed many family outings, boating, traveling with friends and entertaining euchre and bingo parties. Like her heart, her door was always open to family, friends, and strangers.   

Sue is survived by her daughters, Yancey Roberts-Schein (Matt) of Logan, OH, Lesley Matson (Eric) of Keedysville, MD, her brother Wayne (Linda) Smith of Urbana, OH, her five grandchildren, Mary (Eric) Miller, Elle Roberts, Ammryn Roberts, Aaron Schein, David Matson, her three great-grandchildren, Miley Miller, Evan Miller, and her name sake Kelly Sue Miller, brother-in-law, Tim Roberts, her nieces and nephews, Anne Marie (Alan) Hill, Shane (Niki) Smith, Michael Roberts, Aimee (Mick) Fitch, Blair (Brenna) Smith, Trent (Jayme) Roberts, Travis Smith, Kerri (Derek) Metts, and numerous amazing great nieces and nephews.

Sue is preceded in death by her loving husband of thirty-three years, David Lee Roberts on August 2, 2006, her parents, brother, James E. “Jim” Smith, brother-in-law, Lawrence “Larry” Roberts, sisters-in-law, Marge Roberts and Lynn Roberts and her best friend, Giz Salisbury.

Family received friends from 2-4 PM and 5-7 PM on Sunday January 21, 2024 in the Roberts Funeral Home, 60 West Hunter St. Logan, OH 43138. The Nursing Honor Guard presentation will hold a presentation at 4 PM. Rosary services were at 7 PM. Funeral Services were held at 11 AM on Monday, January 22, 2024 in the funeral home. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery, Logan, OH
