Obituary for G. Scott Smith

Retired Funeral Director of Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Homes and Brother of Jeffrey Smith (Funeral Director at Smith-Varns FH) and Robert Smith (Owner/Funeral Director at Lebold-Smith Funeral Home)

G. Scott Smith, 73, of Columbus and formerly of Dover, passed away at home on Sunday, June 11, 2023 following a period of declining health.

Born in Barnesville on February 11, 1950, he was the son of the late Guy M. and Donna C. Smith. He married the former Jennifer W. Parrish on September 7, 1974.

He was a 1968 graduate of Dover High School and attended Kent State University - Tuscarawas and Cleveland State University.  Scott served in the U.S. Army as a Specialist 4 Medic in Ansbach and Stuttgart Germany before returning home to continue his education.

During high school and the years following, Scott began his career at Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover running ambulance calls, and also at C&C Ambulance Service in New Philadelphia.

After graduating from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1975, Scott then served as a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer for over forty years at a family owned funeral home in Columbus, and most recently at Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home in Worthington before retiring due to health issues. Additionally, he served his community as a member and Past Commander of American Legion Post #82, member and Past President of the Clintonville Area Chamber of Commerce, and President of the Clintonville Fourth of July, Inc. celebrations for many years. He was also a member of The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and was a Clintonville Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year.

Scott greatly enjoyed working in his yard, flower beds, and garden and was a master at cooking and grilling wonderful meals.  He was always in charge of the family Christmas dinner cooking the beef tenderloins to perfection.

He is survived by his wife, Jennifer W. (Parrish) Smith of the home; sons Adam P. Smith of Columbus, and Matthew S. Smith of Atlanta, GA; brothers Robert L. Smith and Jeffrey C. (Mary Ann) Smith of Dover; sister Kim (Bob) Antonelli of Panama City Beach, FL; mother-in-law Dorothy Parrish of New Philadelphia, brother-in-law Jim (Sandy) Parrish and family of New Philadelphia, and many nieces and nephews who graduated from "Scotty School".  Also, surviving are uncle George "Pete" Bailey, cousins Greg Bailey and Jon Bailey and respective families, all of Parkersburg, WV.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his father-in-law Ray Parrish and aunt Winsome "Winnie" Bailey.

Services for Scott will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home located at 515 High Street in Worthington, OH  43085 .  Burial will follow at Union Cemetery in Columbus with military honors being conducted.  Friends may call at the Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 from 3 to 7 p.m.
